Mariposa : celebrating Canadian folk music : Security and media coverage
Public perception

Following the first three years of the festival, controversy in the press arose regarding "rowdyism” from the “folkniks” at the festival. Several communities filed injunctions to keep the festival out of their areas, which generated press attention. Despite the negativity associated with the folk revival movement at that time, the directors allowed groups such as the Martin Luther King Fund to solicit funds at the festival, taking a stand about the virtues of the folk movement and its traditional relationship to civil rights.
