Letter from Domingos Marques, editor of the newspaper Comunidade, addressed to Prof. David Higgs.
English translation:
“Dear subscriber [Mr. Higgs]:
The newspaper COMUNIDADE is published by a group of people that work voluntarily, offering a few spare hours per week to make a newspaper that serves primarily the necessities of the Portuguese community in Canada.
Although we don’t need to pay wages, the newspaper has expenses of around 250 dollars per number, that money being spent in the paper and the printing of the newspaper, mailing costs, typewriter lease and phone. Such expenses are usually covered with the money that we receive from the subscriptions and the advertisement.
In January we bought an IBM typewriter for 809 dollars and 29 cents, so that we avoid the leasing costs for the machine, which besides being expensive, in the end it doesn’t belong to the newspaper. It is our intention not to use the money from the subscriptions and the advertisement to pay for the machine, as we always need to have a reserve fund to make this newspaper.
This is why we come to you this way and ask your contribution to helps us pay for the machine. We don’t want to suggest an amount, leaving to your discretion and generosity what you can offer.
The amount donated for that effect will be published in the newspaper with the name of the person, or anonymously, if that is what you wish.
You can rest assured that your help will contribute to the maintenance and growth of the newspaper COMUNIDADE which is proving to be one of the best means of information in the Portuguese Canadian community.
